A skip and a soutenu onto Serbia

Two local dancers prepare for an international dance fest which will award them SA colours.

Kayla Rachstein and Brooklyn McGreggor are excited to take Serbia by storm during an international dance fest.

Kayla Rachstein, 13, from Muldersdrift started dancing when she was eight years old. With a passion for dance, Kayla has achieved Gauteng colours for Dance in Performing Arts and has qualified to compete in the International Dance Fest Novi Sad in Serbia in November.

Another dancer, Brooklyn McGreggor, 10, from Weltevreden Park started dancing at the end of 2015 and has already grown to great heights in the dancing world, having also received her colours. She was selected to represent SA in a competition in New York and qualified for the fest.

Both girls plan to put in many hours of practice before the big competition in November for which much excitement is building.

Kayla will perform two dances, one contemporary and one lyrical. “The music inspiring the dances is by Richard Stirton and Sia,” Kayla said.

Brooklyn will perform a contemporary and an acrobatic dance. “For my contemporary dance I have an emotional song that goes with my dance. For my acrobatic dance the song is instrumental and has more of a build-up to go with the strong tricks and moves I will be doing,” she explained.

Both dancers are under the instruction of Ashlee Herbst, who runs Ashlee’s Dance Studio in Weltevreden Park. Kayla and Brooklyn have progressed so much in their dancing over the years and will receive SA colours for being in the Dance Fest, she said.
