Monash FC gets a huge hand up from Shield

Monash Football Club benefits tremendously from Shield's sponsorship.

Pitching up at soccer practice and league matches clad in different coloured track suits is now something of the past for the past for reigning Rand Central league champions, Monash Football Club.

The 2016 defending champions received a major boost from Shield, which sponsored the players with a full strip each, including tracksuits and bags.

Young soccer legend and Monash Football Club coach, Siphiwe Mkhonza (middle front), with Shield brand managers, Nomfundo Khanyile and Gareth Marshall on either side of him, all sharing a moment with the team after the kit handover.

The promising club, coached by young South African legend and former Kaizer Chiefs defender, Siphiwe Mkhonza, had endured difficulties in the past, being able to only supply the players with one jersey each.

The handover was held at Monash University, where the team trains, on 15 July.

The team consists of youths between the ages of 17 and 22 who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and see the club as a source of hope, stability and confidence.

Siphiwe said they appreciated the gesture from Shield and cited the benefits of having a sponsor. “The players will now look like a professional set-up, although they are not there yet. This sponsorship will encourage them, and make them feel that they belong somewhere. [Players] need to be identified with a uniform or brand.”

He added that the club will now be recognised by its uniform as they prepare players for the professional leagues. He and the club captain, Mushiri Zeka, thanked Shield for joining hands with them.

“Having this kit will play a big role in the team, as it will give us the team-building spirit for the game,” said Mushiri.

Shield brand manager, Gareth Marshall, said the brand takes pride in assisting projects at grassroots level. “This sponsorship is part of having a good relationship with Siphiwe Mkhonza. It will obviously prepare them to go on and do big things, which is what the brand is about – getting involved in grassroots.”

The sponsorship consisted of kit bags, track suits, kit, soccer balls and the Shield deodorants the brand is famous for.

Marshall added that this was just the beginning of big things as they intend to maintain a good relationship with the coach.
