River race season heats up for juniors

Local paddler achieves success

Sasol Canoe Club hosted the Sasol Dam-to-Dam Race, a B-grade river race from the Trichardspruit Dam to the Tweedraai Dam, in Trichardt, near Secunda recently.

The river is B-graded as it is quite technical and tricky with lots of rapids, steep drops, huge boulders, scattered with small rocks and narrow. Once the water release is opened, it becomes a raging torrent, so it’s exciting, furious and requires quick reflexes. It is an excellent learning curve for paddlers wanting to prepare for A-grade river races.

The race is calculated to cover 18km as it includes the distance on both the first and the last dam, the river in between and the time paddlers carry their boats up the dam wall, and down the other side, to get into the river and paddle to the next dam.

Tristan Trican from Florida Lake Canoe Club was one of the successful finishers of the race, finishing as the second U/18 youth, in 1h 36m.
