Recently The King’s Tigers cheerleading squad from The King’s School West Rand cheered their way to second place when they participated in the High School Small Co-Ed category during the most recent provincial competition.
This competition was held at St Dominic’s Catholic School in Boksburg, where they competed against numerous other cheerleading squads.
They also qualified to partake in the National Competition, run by the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) which will be held in KwaZulu-Natal at the Chatsworth Centre from 6–9 July.
Even though this team of 22 cheerleaders practices all year round for eight hours a week, they only compete about four or five times a year, which makes this a really big deal for them.
“These competitions really are rough. We have exactly three minutes to do our routine that we’ve practiced through winter, summer, autumn and spring,” Louise Steed, one of the cheerleader moms said.
According to Lynn Ahshene, the other King’s Tigers cheerleader mom, she is looking forward to the national competition as she is working with a dedicated group of teenagers.
