If you can find an indoor cricket game where Marlene Grieb (24) did not give 100 per cent, you will also find cricket balls that can fly by themselves.

The South African women’s indoor cricketer, who plies her trade at the Hillfox Action Sports Arena, is known to be a live-wire on the court.

“She cannot keep still when fielding and often takes the responsibility of the whole team on her shoulders,” said the SA women’s team coach, John Wilson.”She is a solid player – very good with the bat but even better with the ball.”

The Florida Lake resident has been playing for her country since U19 level, even though she only took up the sport in 2009, when she was 16 years old.

Her third World Cup , but first in the open age division, will be played in Dubai in September.

“Our final goal is to win the World Cup, but it is also a journey, and we want to enjoy it and give back to the sport,” Grieb said.

The quick bowler and point fielder had just finished helping her side, Westrand Steamers, a team started by her father Eugene, to another victory at the Hillfox arena, and reflected on her love for the sport.

Marlene Grieb completes yet another run at the Hillfox Action Sports Arena.

“Indoor cricket is more challenging than outdoor cricket. It is fast, it is exhilarating. Everyone has something they love, that brings them joy. For me, it is indoor cricket.”

The SA women’s team manager, Michael Wenk said indoor cricket is completely self-funded in South Africa and still needs help getting the players to Dubai.

“We need between R33 000 and R35 000 per player, so we host many fundraisers that can be seen on our Facebook page, South African Indoor Cricket Ladies 2017 ,” he explained, encouraging the public to also contact him directly for sponsorship opportunities.
