Seven-time IGT Challenge Tour winner, Coert Groenewald, took second place at the Centurion Country Club in the final event of the IGT Challenge Tour’s Race to Q-School Series.
The Roodepoort golfer carded a 69 at 13 under, three shots behind winner Thriston Lawrence from Nelspruit. England’s David Ashley finished in third position.
“I played really well for a 65 in the first round, but the second round was a bit of a scramble,” Lawrence said. “My putter was hot throughout, though, and that always gives you an extra bit of confidence. My ball striking was a lot better today, especially with the longer irons and I hit 14 greens in regulation. To win going into Qualifying School against some very experienced players is fantastic.”
Coert has been one of the most consistent campaigners over the 18 events in the Race to Q-School Series. He won his seventh IGT Challenge Tour title in the Race to Q-School #16 at State Mines Golf Club earlier this year. The victory vaulted the 28-year-old to fourth in the rankings.
In the first round, Coert carded a seven-under-par 64, with a flawless performance which included five birdies and an eagle at the par-four ninth. In the second round, he finished the day on 12 under, two shots behind the leader.
The golfer’s attentions will now be focused on the Sunshine Tour Qualifying Series, which kicks off at the Killarney Country Club.
