Albion’s Opening Tournament a success

Soccer tournament to welcome new season

With just weeks left until the West Rand Soccer League kicks off, Florida Albion Football Club hosted their Opening Tournament. The two-day competition featured more than 200 players and staff from 25 teams around Johannesburg.

The tournament is viewed as the last chance for coaches to tinker with their teams before the season commences. Teams in the U/13, U/14, U/15, U/17 and senior age categories competed for glory and a chance to cement a spot in their respective teams.

Earlier this year, Florida Albion hosted a training camp to get some of their players into top condition for the upcoming season, which coincides with the cricket, rugby and athletics season.

Florida Albion’s Jeremy Govender was happy with the tournament and the support received from other teams on the West Rand and surrounding areas.

“As one of the oldest clubs in the area, we have the facilities to host such a tournament. Teams from all over the city were invited to showcase their skills and support the club. This tournament gives coaches a chance to give their players a run. We will also be hosting a little league tournament for our younger players and we are trying to invest more in women’s soccer,” he said.

The winners in each category received a winners’ medal and trophy. The Wynberg Tigers won the U/13 category while the Randburg Football Club won the U/14 category trophy. Wits Football Club claimed the U/15 and U/17 trophies, proving that they will be a force to watch in the upcoming season. The Dazzlers won the senior category title.
