Kobus ready for his comeback

“I just started training for fun because my two sons decided to take up boxing as a sport."

Kobus Fourie is champing at the bit to finally getting his professional boxing licence again. The 39-year-old fighter is no stranger to the sport, having gone toe to toe with iconic boxer Andre Thysse before hanging up his gloves. Kobus returned to the sport, joining BRD Sports Academy, after his friends convinced him that he still had talent in the ring

“I just started training for fun because my two sons decided to take up boxing as a sport. I decided to join them and after my friends saw how hard I was going against the sand bags, they talked me into getting my licence,” he said.

Kobus fought Thysse in 1999 at the Brixton Palace and lost in the fourth round on points. At the time, he was fighting in the Light Heavyweight category. He believes his experiences of being in the ring will once again guide him and bring more glory to his training team. When he first started training again, Kobus weighed 109kg but after working hard on his fitness, he has lost 13kg.

“I am excited that I will be going for my cruiserweight license this time. The training and preparation I’ve been undergoing will also help me immensely. All I want to do now is get into the ring and just box. I want to thank Richard and Manny Fernandes for their help,” he said.

The professional licence boxing matches will be hosted at the Booysens Amateur Boxing Club on 4 March.
