Florida’s Promo team falls short

Season in full swing

Florida Cricket Club’s Promotional team competed against Crescents Cricket Club at Lenasia Stadium recently.

This was the team’s first match of the new year and they were looking to go at it with a bang. Florida won the toss and elected to bowl first, but the bowlers had a tough time during parts of the innings. However, they managed to restrict their opponents to 222 runs, with Florida’s Caleb Propert bringing in the best figures of three wickets for 21 runs in 5.2 overs. Their next best bowler was Silas Govender who also took three wickets, conceding 49 runs in 10 overs.

Caleb Propert.

With a Double Nelson (222) to chase, the first three Florida batsmen could not get the score going. Deen Kimmie was dismissed for 12 runs, followed by Cole Abrahams with a duck, and Kushdeep Nanra on 10 runs. The Florida team was reeling at just 32 runs for three wickets and and the following batsman, Ahmad Patel, only contributed 14 runs. However, Junior van Rooyen and Caleb Propert steadied the innings, both contributing half-centuries, helping to take their team closer to the target of 222.

But once Probert reached his 50 runs off 56 balls, hitting eight boundaries in the process, he lost his wicket at 129 runs with five wickets down. Junior van Rooyen did not last long after reaching his half century, as he lost his wicket on 50 runs (including five boundaries and a six) off 67 balls.

At 158 with six wickets down, there was still hope for Florida as Ommar Kimmie came in and scored 23 runs off 33 balls – but that was still not enough. The Florida team made 198 runs, 24 runs short for a draw, and 25 short of the victory.

The MVP award went to Caleb Probert who scored 50 runs and had a 3 wicket haul.
