Allen Glen makes their own rugby history

ALLEN'S NEK – This year's U16 rugby team made school history with their unbeaten season of rugby and individual achievements.

Allen Glen High School’s U16 rugby team obtained results this year that no other team in the school’s history has managed.

According to the school’s sports director, Hennie van Vuuren, one of the highlights this year was that they remained undefeated the entire season. “The U16s also took part in the Saheti 7’s rugby tournament, winning the trophy final,” Van Vuuren added.

The team also won the Rustenburg tournament and the Gauteng Lions Cup. Being the Lions Cup winners qualified the team to play in the Virseker Beeldtrofee, which comprises the first and second- placed teams of the respective leagues from six different provinces. The team won the U16 division of the Beeldtrofee.

With these trophies under their belt, the team was nominated for the D12 District awards, where they received the best team of the year award. Van Vuuren and his colleague, JG Spies, received the best coaches award.

Van Vuuren added, “The U16s were invited by Seaverge Chalets to tour down to Port Edward because of their numerous achievements throughout the year. The coaches, as well as the team, are extremely grateful for the appreciation and courtesy of Seaverge Chalets.”

Besides the team’s successes, individuals who excelled included HloHlo Dube, Sinothando Tshontyi, Takalani Nembanzheni, Julius Raybonnie and David Omoluwa who were all selected for the President XV U16 Lions team. Tshontyi, Omoluwa, Dube and Tinashe Gowere were also selected for the Lions High-Performance Team.

Omoluwa received best sports player at the D12 District awards and was invited to play in the Grant Khomo side that represented the Lions in the Craven Week tournament.
