Wrestlers excel at national competition

Ruiter Wrestling Club returned home with a total of 18 medals recently after representing Central Gauteng in the Youth, Junior, Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Women’s Freestyle South African Championships.

Fourteen regions from across the country participated in the competition, which pitted the best young wrestlers against each other.

At the competition, the club’s Qail Adam, Bertie Venter, and Nico Fouche won two gold medals each while Morne Pretorius, Martin Smit, Jandre Venter and Patricia Theledi won a gold medal each. Morne Pretorius and Martin Bothma came home with a silver medal each, while Monique Venter, Josua Ginsburg and Arghale Muller claimed a bronze medal each.

Wrestlers Adriano Couto, Dylan Engelbreght and Biebie Smit were not to be outdone, as they won the South African League Championships. They were participating in the South African Regional league.

Team Ruiter’s wrestlers also helped Central Gauteng win the Youth Greco-Roman Trophy. Coach Dean van Zyl was ecstatic at how well his members did in the provincial team.

“This is one of the biggest national competitions in the country and the wrestlers have worked hard all year preparing for it. I am very proud of all of them for doing so well,” he said.
