HONEYDEW – Bowling pair makes it to the last 16 at the Gauteng Open 2016 Championships.

The Honeydew Bowling Club is immensely proud of its mixed pairs bowling team, which made it to the last 16 at the Gauteng Open 2016 Championships.

Mary-Ann Dummer and Herbie Fox finished undefeated in their group, surpassing Bryanston Country Club, Dunkeld Bowls Club and Pretoria Municipals Bowling Club, to reach the knockout stages at Leases Bowling Club, in Georginia, Roodepoort, on 24 September.

There they beat Iscor Bowling Club 21–3, and Irene Country Club 18–17, before losing to Jonty Rhodes (not the famous cricketer) and Annelise Metaxas of Pretoria Military Bowls Club 18–10. The team from Pretoria went on to win the championships.

“We did brilliantly to make the last 16 in a tournament with so many national players – the best in the province competed,” boasted Dummer, who explained that she and Herbie worked very well so that when one of them did not bowl well, the other would cover for them.

“Mary-Ann did so well, she really played beyond herself,” Fox said, adding that he practises every day.

“I think the secret to our success was all the practice we did. I just love the sport so much for the friendships we make, and the good sportsmanship. I even fight having new technology in my life, because it does not add to it like sports does.”

Honeydew Bowling Club president, John George lauded the pair for their effort. “We are really proud of how they have done against such strong competition.”
