Florida swimmers going full steam ahead

Superb season on the cards for Florida Swimming Club

Florida Swimming Club has had great pre-season competition results. The Club’s swimmers kicked off the pre-season events at the Sasolburg National Championships, where the team placed in the top 10 clubs overall. The swimmers bagged over 20 medals between them with a few national qualifying times being swum as well.

In August, the clubs’ senior swimmers participated in the South African National Short Course Championships in Pietermaritzburg. The event took place from 25 to 28 August, and constituted the trials for the world short course championships being held in Canada in December. The swimmers were on top form, producing personal best times.

The clubs’ juniors took to the water in Boksburg at the Gauteng Junior short course champs, where they also pulled off some sterling performances and had everybody excited.

Callum Thomson and Amy O’Rourke were two of the swimmers who qualified for the national youth championships in April next year.

Coach Tracey Hemphill said the upcoming season holds many prospects for her team as they go into the major preparations for the provincial champs in December.

“Swimmers will be aiming to be at their best to clinch their tickets for the national and regional champs, for which they will have to meet the qualifying criteria set by Swim South Africa,” she said.

In addition to all of this, Florida Swimming Club is working hard and investing heavily in the community and the water-safety programme they are running with Vuleka Schools. The club is working with 175 of the pupils, hoping to develop their swimming and possibly get a few of them into the competitive arena. At the moment, this project is being funded by the club, but they are working on finding someone to support the programme financially.

The club has also launched the 24/24 swim event to be held on 5 November at Maragon Private Schools. Swimmers can enter as a team or as individuals and will have to complete 1 kilometre per hour for 24 hours. It will be a challenging event, but one that the swimmers will have to endure in order to raise funds for the club and all the projects and initiatives coming up in the year. Everyone, including non-members, is welcome to enter. If an individual, school, swimming team or social club is interested in taking part, they should contact Andy Young on 083 379 3527 or ORCAS Swimming on 083 399 1205.
