Sweat and stiff muscles were in abundance at The Wedge, an outdoor recreation park in Muldersdrift, where individuals took part in the sixth Beast Challenge.
The Beast Challenge, an obstacle course race which demands physical and mental fitness, has grown in popularity because of the burgeoning interest in obstacle-course racing and also because the actual course was designed by professional obstacle-course race athletes.
Upper body and leg strength play an important part in carrying you through the race, but the Beast is not all serious. Mud pits, ponds of water, foam walls and water slides are thrown in to keep a smile on your face and make you feel like a child again.
The course, which caters for three different race intensities, namely the tame, wild and savage, aims to continue changing, surprising athletes and challenge-seekers.
Besides the elite athletes and those looking for a challenge, Stand with Stan amputees tested their limits in the 5-km Tame Beast Challenge on 10 September. Founder of Stand with Stan, Stan Andrew, summed up the experience and said, “It was really awesome. I loved seeing fellow amputees just getting down and dirty and again showing everyone that there are actually zero excuses in life.” The organisation also managed to raise funds through the event.

All participants received participatory medals but the top athletes in each category received special recognition.
