Golfers hit more than just balls for charity

HONEYDEW – Tired of your usual game of golf? Try hitting marshmallows instead of golf balls.

Dios Los Ninos (DLN), the Cambridge-associated school, held another well-supported golf day at Eagle Canyon Golf Estate, where golfers were given the opportunity to hit more than just golf balls.

About 20 teams signed up to play four-ball/better ball on 9 September, where they were in line to win prizes and participate in raffles and a sports memorabilia auction. However, the golfers were in for a surprise at the sixth hole, where for an extra R20, golfers could take a swing at a marshmallow.

The golfer who hit a marshmallow the furthest won a prize. Each golfer’s marshmallow was tracked by a golf tee with the golfer’s name attached to it. Golfers enjoyed this extra ‘hole’ even though most struggled to keep the marshmallow on the tee to take a swing.

“After almost a year of planning the big day finally arrived, the 2016 Golf Day. We had a lot of dreams that had to be fulfilled and I am pleased to say that we made it. Our golf day was a huge success and we walked away from it with a big smile,” said Leonie de Kock, principal of DLN.

“The players had a lovely day and DLN will be able to do the things we were dreaming of. A huge thank you to every single person who played a part in making this day a success.”

The funds raised from the golf day will go towards buying software for two mathematics computer programs which will help teach children with dyslexia and dyscalculia (severe difficulty in making arithmetical calculations as a result of a brain disorder), as well as paying off two Smartboards recently installed at the school.
