Kloofendal is blooming

KLOOFENDAL–Residents are welcome to purchase the Wild Flowers of Kloofendal Nature Reserve hand guide.

Friends of Kloofendal (FroK) is proud to announce the success of the Wild Flowers of Kloofendal Nature Reserve hand guide which was printed last year and launched in April this year.

FroK guide Karin Spottiswoode said that three-quarters of the stock has been sold and they are planning to launch the next edition in the near future.

“The hand guide, used to identify different flowers, provides a brief description for each, the family of flowers it belongs to and how they look. Some plants and flowers are translated into English and Afrikaans. The references are also at the back of the book which gives you an explanation of the plant and you can also confirm your identification through your own research. It’s a DIY manual.”

The nature enthusiast explained that in spring, plants grow, and in winter, they become dormant. Plants depend on their leaves to produce sugar and proteins for plants to grow. Humans and insects need plants to survive.

“Most people don’t know about the different flowers that bloom around them. Some of them can be identified in our own gardens if they are not indigenous plants like the ones that are mostly found on the reserve,” said Spottiswoode.

She added that the book is sold for R120 and is available at the Kloofendal Nature Reserve. The next book will be on the gold mine situated on the reserve that will be written by author Rod Kruger.

“We also welcome volunteers to come and learn how to manage the reserve, it’s features and rules. For more information about what is taking place at the reserve, they contact FroK or visit our website.”
