Play bowls, live longer

RUIMSIG – Bowls made exciting and different with Super 7 bowls competition.

Bowls players from the Ruimsig Bowling Club had a chance to celebrate the beginning of Spring with a very special and unique competition.

The two bowls greens at the club were full of eager bowlers from various ages to participate in the club’s Super 7 competition on 27 August. Club captain, Mike Sampson explained that it is their goal to attract younger players to the sport, so they decided to host a unique competition to fulfill this goal.

Sampson said this competition is named after the Super 7s rugby tournament and works on a faster points system. “We started at 9am and after half an hour we are already finished with the first set, so it is fast and exciting.” He added that they urged players to wear coloured clothing so it differs from the usual white worn by players, again to make it more exciting to attract younger players.

Sampson explained that it was only a one-day competition, and bowls is such a great sport, because everyone from 12 to 92 years can play. A player, Naude Joubert, said that his 13-year-old daughter had leukemia, but could play bowls at the time.

“This is such a stunning sport for her as it is low contact.”

Joubert added that his daughter is still very fragile so she can’t play sports like hockey, so bowls is a very good alternative.

Ken Meyer is the oldest player at the club at 92 years old. He said that he has been playing bowls for 32 years and loves it as it is such a social sport. “I once saw a sticker, ‘play bowls, live longer’,” concluded a smiling Meyer.
