Tennis with the girls on Tuesdays

RUIMSIG – Tennis is alive at the Ruimsig Country Club.

It may not always be the most terrific tennis, but everyone has a smashing time when the women get together to play socially at the Ruimsig Country Club.

The club has changed immensely since 1996, when it got its first woman member, Renée Rink. More and more women have been welcomed into the fold since then, and today there are more women than men.

“I think that is due to the strong social aspect here – women look for more of a social outlet than men do,” Rink said. This holds true, as social tennis on Tuesday mornings is quite a sight.

A large group of women meet to have fun and enjoy some doubles sets and coffee afterwards, with only one or two loving husbands and male friends to join them. But a great time is had by all, and the girls do fight for their points.

“It is great tennis,” smiled captain of tennis at the club, Ellaine Wells. “There is no pressure and not much competition. We chat, drink coffee and enjoy the fresh air, as long as there is no rain,” said Wells.

Grace Watson said she has always played tennis but after her husband died she contacted Wells and joined in the women’s social tennis. “They are such lovely people and made me feel so welcome. I will be here until I can’t play anymore,” she laughed.

Being the only man in attendance one Tuesday, did not deter Tony Henri, who described the tennis as “lovely” and “casual”. “They need me to bring some strength to the group,” he joked.
