FAIRLAND – Dragons, gryphons and phoenixes clash at Radford House athletics.

Blue dragons, green gryphons and yellow phoenixes flew to new heights at an athletics meeting of mythical proportions.

Radford House held a riveting interhouse athletics day at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium on 19 August, and brightly-clothed athletes ran, jumped, threw and cheered their way to victory. The event was so hotly contested, it came down to the final race – a nail-biting senior relay.

Gryphon House snatched the win and won the day with 228 points. Phoenix House came second with 226 points and Dragon House came third with 216 points. Phoenix House won the spirit trophy for their cheering.

“It was a great day with lovely weather and all the children had fun,” said Philip Kokot, principal of the Fairland-based school. “What stood out for me was that when the children competed, they all had grins on their faces; it was good to see them enjoy exercise outdoors as opposed to being glued to a screen indoors,” he said, smiling.

Every competing athlete had a blast as they demonstrated their strength, speed, agility and endurance in running, long jump and shot-put. Despite the competitiveness of the day, sportsmanship reigned supreme and a large crowd of pupils and family cheered every contestant on.
