Nikita the Unconquerable

Nikita aiming for gold at international tournament

Discovery’s Nikita Howell will be hoping to live up to her reputation of being unconquerable as she takes on her biggest challenge yet. The 15-year-old lass will show off her talent at the 3rd International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) World Shoto Cup 2016 next week. She will be representing South Africa at the competition, which will be held at Cape Town’s International Convention Centre.

Karatekas from more than 50 countries countries such as Australia, Canada, Lebanon, and New Zealand will be touching down in the Mother City.

The event is dedicated to upholding the principles of Master Funakoshi Gichin’s Dojo Kun, which are to seek perfection of character, be faithful, endeavour, respect others and refrain from violent behaviour.

Nikita qualified for the tournament late last year, when she participated in the National Trials held in Durban.

“I enjoy karate not only because it has taught me self-defence, but because it’s a way I can express myself and my self-confidence. It helps to keep me fit and healthy. Although I’m not sure if I want to continue karate as a career, I would love to represent my country at the Olympics,” she said.

Nikita, who trains at the Newville Shotokan Karate Club in Maraisburg, has been involved in the sport from an early age. However, she started training seriously in 2013, and her hard work, coupled with her talent, has ensured that she is a top prospect for the club at various competitions.
