Groenewald feeling green

Local golfer in action

A stormy day tested golfers earlier this month as they participated in the IGT Tour’s Ebotse Challenge. The unisex competition saw some of the top young golfers in the country vying for the top spot, with local golfer Coert Groenewald among the pack hunting for glory.

Groenewald and his peers had to look on as amateur Philip Kruse held on in the final round to clinch his maiden IGT Tour title. Groenewald started the week off by carding a four-over-par 76 to finish the first round tied for 18th position. In the second round, there was improvement from Groenewald as he posted a three-over-par 71 to put himself within sniffing distance of the top ten. However, things did not go as planned for the local golfer in the third and final round, as brutal winds played havoc on the greens. Unable to cope with the conditions, Groenewald battled through to finish with a seven-over-par 76.

As the winds blew and the golfers struggled, Kruse managed to put together a final round one-under-par 71. Carrie Park carded a 74 to secure her second runner-up finish this season, while former IGT Tour winner Terence Boardman closed with a 69 to finish third.

With the season half-way to completion, Groenewald will be working hard to get his name etched on the trophies in a few of the remaining title challenges. The Kyalami Challenge and Wingate Challenge are the two remaining competitions for this month.
