Three generations obtain national colours in sport

The Rossouw family of Roodekrans has reached the pinnacle of sporting achievements in South Africa, with members of its second and third generations qualifying for national colours this year.

Grandfather Burger Rossouw was first awarded national colours for ring-ball in 1976. Forty years later, father and daughter Jacques and Tazmin qualified for national colours in judo, by achieving victory at the South African Judo trials. This victory entitled them to participate in the Commonwealth Judo Championships, where Jacques finished in third position in his division, while Tazmin finished second in hers. Jacques, who is a first Dan black belt, is also one of the coaches at the Doryoku Judo Club, where he assists young judoka with their skills.

“It’s not often that you have three generations of Protea players in a family.

It’s not something you can plan, but it’s a positive thing for the family and something to be proud of,” said Jacques.
