Wrestlers excel at Nationals

Wrestlers victorious at championships

Three wrestlers from the West Rand Wrestling Gymnasium excelled at a recent national wrestling competition.

Head coach Juan Nel won a gold medal at the South African Masters Championships held at Carnival City. His podium finish also served as a qualifier for the World Championships in Poland later this year.

“Qualifying to compete in Poland is great. Wrestling is a sport I recommend because it helps with discipline, self-confidence and concentration. Wrestling is also greatly beneficial for rugby players – many top players have wrestled before becoming great players,” he said.

Juan was not the only podium finisher for the club. In the South African Presidents Championship for junior wrestlers, Justin Lansberg and Riehan Botha both pulled off medal-winning bouts.

Justin won two gold medals – one in freestyle and the other in greco style wrestling in the U/13 category. Riehan, who participated in the U/15 category, won a silver medal in freestyle.
