Team Rage sees gold in Brakpan

Kickboxers excel in MMA tournament

Team Rage Kickboxing Club was all the rage at the recent Eastern Gauteng Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Tournament. The eight kickboxers from the club did not disappoint in the competition held earlier in July in Brakpan, and returned home, decorated with medals. Seventeen-year-old Cole Langa was the envy of many athletes as he showed off his skills, winning a silver medal in the 76kg weight division and a gold medal in the Open division. What has kept Cole smiling weeks after the competition is defeating an opponent in the 90kg weight division on his way to gold.

“Winning motivates me to continue working hard and be rewarded for it. Training is hard but when you win, it makes it worth it. Kickboxing has given me a sense of pride and self-worth, which is another reason why I continue working hard,” he said.

Cole’s accomplishment of winning a gold medal in Brakpan was mirrored by his clubmate and friend Calla du Toit. This seventeen-year-old, who is better known for his skills on the rugby field rather than those in a kickboxing ring was in his element in the competition. He won a gold medal in the 76kg weight division.

“This year has gone well for me,” said Calla. “While I was disappointed with the bronze medal I won at the SA Nationals, victory at Brakpan makes up for it a little bit. ‘Train hard, fight easy’ is my motto. It means that I prepare for any eventuality in a match, so that things will go well,” he said.

Cole and Calla were not the only athletes from Team Rage who impressed in Brakpan. Five athletes, namely Dee Geyer (55kg), Mina Lombaard (66kg), Karin van Jaarsveldt (60kg), Dyllan Opperman (50kg) and Neville Gobey (90kg) won silver in their weight categories, while Shaun Gobey won a bronze in the 75kg division.
