Anyone can challenge the Beast inside

MULDERSDRIFT – Children and amputees show that the Beast Challenge is anyone's race.

Are you ready to release your inner beast? Community members, obstacle-course race fanatics and individuals of Stand with Stan were up to the challenge.

The Beast Challenge, an obstacle course race situated at The Wedge in Muldersdrift, can seem daunting to most. However, the Beast Challenge was opened up to amputees of Stand with Stan and the community to try out some of the obstacles and prove that even the youngest or less-physically-able individuals can unleash their inner beast.

The obstacles tested were those on the Tame Beast trail, which is a 5km course for any fitness level. Other course routes entail the 10km Wild Beast and the 15km Savage and Savage Elite courses for the fittest of the fit.

The Beast Challenge spokesperson, Nicolas van Rooyen, said, “Obstacle course racing is a growing sport in South Africa. We have people here who are trying to qualify for the OCR [Obstacle Course Racing] World Championships later this year.

“The course allows you to do things you would not normally do and release your inner child. We want to cater to the masses and make it more fun. In the future we hope to include more water slides and foam baths in the Tame Beast,” Van Rooyen added.

Elite obstacle course racing athletes, such as Jason Friedman and Sabrina Daoliowere, were present to show the crowd how to handle some obstacles and help them through each obstacle. On an actual race day, there are marshals at every obstacle to ensure everyone’s safety. During the race, if you do not feel up to a certain task, there are alternative obstacles or activities for you to do to finish the race and everyone receives a medal.

The Beast Challenge set for 23 July had to be postponed, therefore the next Beast Challenge will be on 10 September.
