Race season in full swing

River racing in full swing

Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) hosted a 30 kilometre race from Daleside to Meyerton on the Klip River on 10 July.

Despite it being winter and the water being icy, Gauteng canoeists flocked to the event to kick off their training for the major events that take place later in the year.

The competition provided experienced paddlers with an opportunity to improve their fitness, and gave newer paddlers a chance to obtain both points and experience before taking on the longer, tougher races.

Former FLCC coach, Peter Bailey, enjoyed his 30km sweep at the back of the race, ensuring that all paddlers arrived safely at the finish. Since he is already an A-grade canoeist, his focus is on mileage and fitness. The race provided him with an opportunity to paddle the distance his training schedule requires.
