Great Vaal River canoe race

Canoeists get ready for marathon races.

A number of the members of the Florida Lake Canoe Club competed in a recent (Saturday 25 June) 25km canoe race, from the junction of the Klip and Vaal Rivers to the clubhouse of the host club, the Watuni Canoe Club, on the Vaal River in Vanderbijlpark.

The canoeists participated in this race in preparation for the longest river race in South Africa, the 240km Berg River Canoe Marathon, which takes place in the middle of July, and the 80km Fish River Marathon, which will take place in October, in Cradock.

Dekker Erasmus and his partner Shaun Maphanga enjoyed their river race, finishing in 11th position overall with a time of 2:15:00 in the 2nd Sub-veteran age category.
