Protea colours for ring-ball players

Jetting off to Maurtitius.

Three players from the Warriors Ring-ball Club have been selected to play in the Proteas’ national ring-ball team.

The U/17 girls’ and boys’ teams will be competing in Mauritius later this year. Kevin Kruger was chosen to captain the boys’ team. He’s been playing ring-ball since he was 10 years old, and is very excited to have received his first Protea national colours.

“This is my first time in a Protea team and I want us to do well. I have played a lot for South African teams but players are only eligible to receive Protea colours from the U/17 team level and higher. I did not expect to be made captain of the team but I will do my best to lead the team,” he said.

Katelyn Cosmo and Vicky Pieterse made it into the U/17 girls’ team and both are eager to impress. Katelyn, who hails from Witpoortjie, was delighted with her first-time selection for the national team. She vowed to impress with her skills and to learn from the competition. “I only started playing the sport two years ago, so to be chosen this soon is a major achievement for me. I will work hard and be successful in the team,” she said.

Vicky, who is a pupil at Hoërskool Florida, aims to become a professional ring-ball player. “I was 11 years old when I started playing the sport, after my mother introduced me to it. I fell in love with it, because it is a fun, family-orientated sport. My goal is to do well in the national team in Mauritius. It is a great stepping-stone for me as I want to play the sport professionally in future,” she said.
