Paddlers excel at SA champs

Sisters victorious at Western Cape competition

Florida Lake Canoe Club’s junior paddlers excelled at the South African Canoe Marathon Championships.

Under cold conditions, sisters Ameerah and Kamilah Hank from Discovery scored first place finishes in the U/10 and U/12 age categories respectively. They were both awarded gold medals for their efforts.

Matthew van der Merwe, another member from the Florida Canoe Club participated in the U/12 age category race. He finished in second place and was awarded a silver medal.

The competition which took place last weekend (11 and 12 June) at Zandvlei in the Western Cape provides paddlers with points needed to be recognised by the Gauteng Canoe Union. This is all for a chance for the paddlers to receive their Junior Canoeing colours.

The Florida club is opening its doors to young children who are interested in learning to paddle. Those interested can sign up for the Learn To Canoe Sessions on Sunday afternoon.

Children who would like to learn canoeing are welcome to sign up for Sunday afternoon Learn To Canoe Sessions. Written parental permission in the form of an indemnity is required, and the children must be able to swim in deep water for a short time. Life-jackets are provided and are compulsory and all equipment is provided. For further information contact 082 857 8571.
