Wilro Lions Cycle Challenge goes full steam ahead

Cycling for a good cause

For 30 years, the Lions Club of Wilro Park has been providing assistance to the needy in the community. To ensure their charitable deeds don’t come to a halt due to lack of funds, the club hosts an event to collect money each year.

Under the name ‘Ubuntu’, the club has been working hard to generate funds to assist the community.

They’re currently in the throes of organising their 18th annual Wilro Lions Charity Cycle Race, which will start from the Tarlton International Raceway on Sunday 18 September.

It will be the eighth consecutive time the Cycle Challenge has taken place at this venue.

Funds raised from the Cycle Challenge will be used to finance the numerous outreach projects such as sponsoring of Guide Dogs and Dogs for Autistic Children, sponsoring of spectacles and hearing aids, and sponsoring daily feeding schemes.

The Lions also sponsor bursaries for less fortunate youths in the country. One of this year’s major projects is the refurbishment of the Gateway Village (Differently-Abled community) on the West Rand.

The Cycle Challenge will be part of the 2017 Official Premier Seeding Series for the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

This allows cyclists who complete the Wilro Lions Cycle Challenge to obtain good seeding and start times when entering cycle events.

Last year, in the Elite Men’s 114 kilometre event, Nolan Hoffman was crowned the winner with a time of 2:44:26, while in the Elite Women’s section, Juanita Venter was victorious with a time of 3:20:43.
