Roodies to host annual winter race

Local running club to host road race.

It is that time of the year when the Roodepoort Athletics Club gets ready to host its annual Northgate road race. In its 20th year, the race, which takes place at the Northgate Shopping Centre, will consist of a 10km and a 5km run.

The race is not only to help athletes get through the Comrades Marathon hangover but to give back to the community.

R5 from each of this year’s entries will be donated to local charities such as the Mother of Peace Orphanage and the Lighthouse Baby Shelter.

Free T-shirts will be handed out to the first 1 000 entries in the 10 km race and to the first 200 entries in the 5 km race.

Those interested in participating in the race can enter online at www.northgaterace.co.za, or on the day of the race from 6.00am at Entrance 4 of the Northgate Shopping Centre.

All those who complete the road race will receive a medal, with the first 1 500 athletes in the 10 km race and the first 300 athletes in the 5 km race receiving their medals at the finish line.

The rest of the medals will be posted to the participants.

The fee for the 10 km race will be R60, plus an additional R20 for those without a licence, to enable them to race on a temporary license. The fee for the 5 km run will be R30 and participants don’t need to have a licence. Entries for Grandmasters will be priced at R20.

The start gun will be fired at 7.30am on 26 June at the Northgate Shopping Mall. The race will start and end at Entrance 4.

All results will be available 14–21 days after the race at www.roodepoortathleticsclub.co.za and www.raceresults.co.za.
