Nici and Mike bowl competition away

Leases duo bowling competition away

Leases Bowling Club has a lot be happy about as their bowlers excelled on the national stage recently.

Protea bowler Nici Neal won the National Open Singles and the National Fours while her clubmate Mike Marnewick won the National Seniors Singles and National Fours titles.

The two players were participating in the national competition which was held in Pretoria and Durban.

It is the second time in three years Nici has won the singles and it is only the second time Mike has won the seniors title.

In the National Fours, Nici partnered up with Karen Gerber, Debbie Perucatti and Lynn Marnewick.

Mike relied on Wilson Malobola, Morgan and Theuns Fraser.

With a superb performance Pretoria, Nici sealed victory at the nationals which ensures that she will represent South Africa at the World Bowls tournament in New Zealand.

She was one of five women who was chosen on merit.

Nici will also represent the country in Australia at the World Singles Championships next year in November.

“I am on top of the world as things are going well for me. However, winning the fours with my team was an even better feeling and I enjoyed playing with them,” said Nici.

Mike has 33 years of experience in the sport and he said his victory in Durban is as good as any other he has achieved in his career.

“Every win gets my record up and that is a positive. It looks even better now that I have won the Fours which is something I have never won. I would like to thank my team for for achieving this great feat,” he said.

Mike who has also won the National Mixed PAIRS title with his wife Lynne in Hermanus last year is planning to defend it in Kimberly.

“This is a game of equal opportunity and players are judged on their skills. So to win a title with my wife is always satisfying,” he said.

Nici and Mark will also be participating in the International Quardrangular and Triangular Series’ taking place in July.

They take on continental rivals Zimbabwe, Namibia and the South African Junior squad.
