Comrades done and dusted for Maphanga

Paddler traded boat for running shoes

Proving paddlers are versatile, Florida Lake Canoe Club’s Shaun Maphanga participated in this year’s Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

Braving the early morning chill, Maphanga was one of 20 000 runners participating in the 91st running ultra-marathon.

This was Maphanga’s second time competing in the competition. Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas was proud of Maphanga’s accomplishment.

“Numerous paddlers throughout South Africa enjoy long distance and endurance running events with the need to be a good fit runner coming. This comes in handy for long distance endurance canoe races such as the Dusi where paddlers frequently have to run for kilometres carrying their boats,” she said.

Competing in the Men Open category, Maphanga finished the 87 kilometre endurance event as the second finisher from Florida Lake Canoe Club with a time of 8:56:36. This earned him the Bill Rowan medal.

The canoe club’s Serge van Hee competing in the Men Open category was ahead of Maphanga and finished the race in an impressive time of 7:58:00.

This also earned him the Bill Rowan medal.
