SAPS West Rand are provincial champs

Police trade their guns for soccer boots

Gauteng police traded their guns and handcuffs for soccer boots as they participated in the SAPS Provincial Championship.

The competition was held earlier this month.

The SAPS West Rand soccer team had players from all West Rand stations.

Their talent and skills led the team to win their first SAPS Provincial Championship.

They were up against SAPS Pretoria in the finals and had to come from behind to seal the victory.

Pretoria was the first to score and led the match 1-0.

With the West Rand team trailing, Constable Velli Shivuri equalized and both teams were level on 1-1.

With scores level, a foul by Pretoria in the 18 yard area resulted in a penalty for the West Rand.

Constable Chimani Babedi was calm under pressure and converted the penalty to give his team the victory.

The SAPS Provincial Championship has eight teams facing off against each other in a round robin format.

On their way to the final, the West Rand team played against teams from areas such as Soweto, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

They won five matches, lost two and few one.

Several players from the West Rand team were awarded for their hard work on the field.

Jerry Malinga was named coach of the tournament while Sylvester Mokala was named manager of the tournament.

Moses Rasuwa was awarded goalkeeper of the tournament and Noble Shirinda was awarded player of the tournament.
