Seyffert wins classic MTB race

Local wins FNB Magalies

It was not an easy victory for Roodepoort native Pieter Seyffert at the FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic at the ATKV in Buffelspoort last weekend (21 May).

He completed the 70 kilometre FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic in an impressive time of 3.26.31. followed by Nico Sterk in second place while Julius Cobbett finished third position.

“The route was very challenging. I took it easy on the technical and flat sections, and pushed on the up hills. There were sections without single track that were really bumpy and rocky. I felt for the guys that were on hard tail mountain bikes today. The competition is getting stronger every year. It feels really good to still be able to walk away with a win,” he said.

In the woman’s 70 kilometre FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic, victory was secured by Robyn De Groot in a time of 3.38.37.

Amy Beth McDougall came in second position while Theresa Ralph finished in third place.

“The route was easier than what I remembered. There wasn’t as much climbing, but it was good. I came off of my bike on a downhill that was about 20 kilometres from the finish. The fall definitely disturbed my rhythm. I could feel my collarbone, but I felt comfortable holding onto my handlebars. Crossing the finish line first is a nice feeling, especially after my crash,” she said.

Brandon Van der Berg secured the top spot on the podium in the men’s 35 kilometre FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic in a time of 1.45.28 seconds while Danielle Strydom was the woman to beat in the women’s race as she finished in first place with a time of 2.01.52.

The 15kmFNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic was the source of much excitement with Ian Els crossing the line first in the men’s race in 43.34.

In the women’s race, Monique van Wyk was the first rider home in 49.47.
