Roodies athletes off to Comrades

Roodies athletes ready to compete at Comrades event

Chilly conditions this weekend (15 May) were not enough to dampen the party mood of the Roodepoort Athletics Club.

They were hosting a Comrades Marathon Farewell party to wish all their members who will be participating in the event the best of luck.

Family and friends were in attendance as club chairman Charlie Herselman handed over the athlete’s official race numbers for Comrades.

The club has novices such as Nicky Gouws, Lizette Barrish and Quinton van Zyl who will be participating in the Comrades for the first time.

However, they will not be alone of the road as experienced runners such as Maylah Pieterse who recently became the only woman in the country to complete 26 Om Die Dam Ultra Marathon races.

She is also aiming to finish the Comrades Marathon for the 26th time.

Another experienced runner from the club is Dale Rynhoud who will be running aiming for his 27th marathon finish. He recently finished the Midmar Mile and is raring to go.

There will also be husband and wife team Andrè and Bonnie Posthumus who will be cheering each other on during the race and help each other over the finish line.

With these experienced runners along with advisors such as Eugene Havinga and Jan Kemp, the club’s novices will be ready and know what to expect.
