Klip Race Carnage

Paddler excels at Klip race

Florida Lake Canoe Club’s young paddler Jaydon Hunt won his second U/14 title at the Klip River this past weekend.

The event was hosted by Victoria Lake Canoe Club and started from Daleside Ixoxo Manzi riverside resort, through Henley on Klip to finish at Danie Maclean Park in Meyerton.

The race was a distance of almost 20-kilometres as paddlers begin the new race season.

New paddlers learning the ropes require a minimum number of races to be A graded and are able to participate at major river races throughout the country.

This is to build up stamina to cover mileage of up to 100-kilometres for major events.

“It was a cold drizzly wet day on Saturday as paddlers confidently approached the mine rapid, over the hill from the Bass Lake, where numerous boats were washed sideways into rocks and boulders resulting in a number of boats being damaged and unable to continue the race,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

The 13 year old Jaydon excelled at the race despite cold conditions.

“The talented and very experienced river paddler cruised comfortably through the rapids with no hesitation, nor any problems despite the carnage of swimmers and broken boats among the adult participants,” said Dallas.
