Skate for Freedom Cup

Join in the fun at the Freedom Skate Cup

It’s been two years since the first Solstice Skate-Cup (Freedom Skate Cup) took place in September at the Warriors Ringball Club courts.

The event was hosted by Roodepoort based NPO (Non-pofit Organisation) Make Them Awesome.

The organization is a skills and development organisation compiled of young, vibrant youth members from the Roodepoort community reaching out to make a difference.

They achieve this by encouraging and facilitating the development of youth skills through sports, arts, and other creative means.

In it’s first year, the competition was well received, inviting skateboard enthusiasts from areas such as Florida, Ruimsig and Krugersdorp.

Skaters were split into juniors and seniors who competed in two rounds before the final third round.

Awards went to the Best Trick in both divisions as well as prizes for sportsmanship and participation.

This year the competition will be expanded with five elimination rounds incorporating various obstacles.

The skaters try to impress three industry professionals, providing the 3 finalists with the opportunity to win equipment as well as prizes.

Competition organisor Thulani Sejo said the competition is open to all skateboarding enthusiasts.

“The Solstice Skate Cup is a creative means to raise extreme sports awareness amongst members of the youth and the general public. This event is to find upcoming talent and facilitate its development in this field. Skateboarding is becoming increasingly popular amongst the youth of our area. This is one of the few platforms available that provides the opportunity for development and exposure. There is a lack of platforms in the west rand for young skaters to compete competitively, enabling them to further grow their skills and pursuing the sport from a social to professional,” he said.

Although the event is scheduled for 1 October, Sejo and Tershia Rehman have been hard at work to ensure the event goes off without a hitch.
