Die Ruiter wrestlers in national team

Wrestlers from Die Ruiter excel in Cape Town

Three wrestlers from Die Ruiter Wrestling Club excelled as they participated in national wrestling trials.

The event was held in Cape Town last month and is known as a grading tournament to wrestlers.

Those who excel in their categories qualified to be in the national team that will head to the Cadet and Junior Continental Championships later this year.

The competition had wrestlers participating in grecko style and freestyle wrestling.

Wrestler Machiel Grobler was over the moon as he came back home with a gold medal in grecko and a silver medal in freestyle.

It is his first time being in the national team as a cadet.

“It has been ten years in the making but I have finally succeeded. This is my first time being in the national team but I will strive for even bigger stages to represent my country,” he said.

Grobler wont be the only cadet in the team from Die Ruiter, Arghale Muller will also be joining him in the team as a cadet.

Muller who wrestles in the 54 to 58-kilogram weight division won a silver medal in freestyle.

“I felt excited when I realized I won a silver medal. It just feel so surreal that It has not sunk in yet,” he said.

Because females are only allowed to wrestle in one style in the trials, junior wrestler Patricia Theledi wrestled in the under-48-kilograms weight division.

“I’ve been on that stage before so my goal is to improve my results as much as I can. But I wouldn’t have gotten this chance if it wasn’t for my coach and teammates who have been supportive of me all the time and I’m grateful to them,” she said.
