Cole Stevens on the tee

GOlf sensation Cole Stevens

Rising golf talent Cole Stevens has been continuing his fine form he found towards the end of last year.

Last year, he went from being named the top player in the U/15 Boy on the Central Gauteng Golf Union (CGGU) Order of Merit to placing fifth In the 2015 Bobby Locke Invitational and 2015 Silver Vase Invitational.

Since the year has started, Cole has won numerous tournaments including the Dainfern championship and Easter Tour tournament.

He started by carding his best ever score at a tournament at Fish River in a round of 67.

He then participated in the Curro International tournament held in Durbanville and earned a spot to represent the country and Curro South Africa in the 2016 World Amateur Championship held in The French Island of Reunion.

He placed fifth at the 2016 World Amateur Audi Championship Cole and won the longest drive of the tournament.

“Towards the end of last year, my form picked up and I started posting good scores. My drop in form was due to changing clubs which messed with my swing. However, I have now fixed my swing and things are getting back to normal. The year has started well for me but I know I can do more and that is what I am working towards,” he said.

The highlight and most humbling achievement for Cole is that he has been chosen as part of the SA Golf Elite Squad.

Cole, who is a grade nine pupil, has to balance his school work and golf tournaments.

“It is a bit tough to balance both but my school and family have been very supportive and help me wherever they can,” he said.

Cole is now looking forward to the Dimension Data Junior Open where he feels he has a good chance of winning after missing out on the competition in previous years.

He also has his eye on the Woodlands Junior Masters Golf Championship and the Ekhuruleni Quadrangular where players from four provinces such as Mpumalanga will participate.
