Johnny aims for boxing titles

Johnny Muller itching to get his hands on two prized titles later this month

Local boxing hero Johnny Muller will take on South African Cruiserweight champion Kevin Lerena later this month (24 April).

The bout which will be held at Emperors Palace will be organised by AfricanRing in partnership with Golden Gloves Promotions.

The match between Muller and Lerena will be a sequel to their 2014 match up. Muller beat Lerena on points over 12 rounds.

On the line in the match will be Lerena’s title and the vacant WBA Pan African title.

“I feel 100% because I’ve trained hard and prepared well for this big fight. The last time I fought Lerena in the ring I won. But I know it will be tougher second time around. Things have changed from the first time we met in the ring and he has done well for himself,” said Muller.

Last year, Muller decided to change divisions from a light heavyweight fighter to a cruiserweight fighter.

His first match in the division was against Donald Kampamba and Mateusz Masternak. He won both matches convincingly before suffering a loss to Ukraine fighter Oleksandr Usyk.

“I am now a solid cruiserweight and am more comfortable with the weight. The change has been a positive one for me and I am taking each bout as it comes. I learn from each loss and each victory so I can become a better boxer,” he said.

In preparation for the match, Muller has been working on his power, strength and endurance over 12 rounds. He has the help of his conditioning coach Sean von Abo from Helderkruin and former 19-time South African Champion Harold Volbrecht as his boxing coach.

“My skills have improved because I have been working hard to be very fast in the ring. I want to be able to go all 12 rounds with Lerena. “I will work diligently from the start of the bell in the first round. The plan is to win every round and take it from there,” he said.

This year, Muller’s goal is to win a title and improve on his boxing performances.

“I see myself with those championship title belts. The reason I am working hard everyday is to get my hands on them. But I can’t do that without the support of the community. So I would like to ask people to come and support us at Emperors Palace on 24 April,” he said.

On the bill is another local boxer Hansie Carr who will be taking on Nkaimeng Leraba.
