Bowls duo off to junior nationals

Corrie and Wislon will represent South Africa in the junior team of the Quadrangular series.

Local lawn bowlers Corrie Tagg and Wilson Malobolo have been selected into the South African Junior team.

They will participate in the Quadrangular series against the Open Sides from Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa at the end of July at the Edenvale Bowling Club.

Tagg from Discovery Bowling Club said it was unbelievable that he’d been selected to be part of the team as it has been his goal.

This puts him one step closer to representing the senior national team.

The 23-year-old started participating in lawn bowls because his family is part of the sport and found it an exciting challenge to compete.

“Watching the Commonwealth games when I was younger and seeing our bowlers do well was great. What was better was to see the people competing were people I knew. Bowls is an enjoyable game and I have made many new friends on and off the field,” he said.

Tagg extended a welcome to the community who might be interested in trying lawn bowls.

“Just take off your shoes and get on the greens. It is a tough game but I encourage every youngster to try it at least once and experience the joy that I experience on the lawns,” he said.

Tagg will be joined in the team by Malobolo from Witpoortjie Bowling Club.

The 23-year-old has been playing for five years after he was introduced to the sport by P.C van Niekerk.

However, his mentor passed away but Malobolo has continued to play lawn bowls and his recent successes prove that he was made for the sport.

“I just play for pleasure because I really enjoy it. I am not in it to make money or anything like that,” he said.

Last year he won his first title, the Masters Sables Invitational at the Discovery Bowls which has seen him participating in the provincial U/25 team along with Tagg.

His main goal is to represent the senior national team.

“I did not expect to be chosen but it rings me immense joy. When I first found out I just wanted to jump up and down because I was shocked and happy,” he said.
