Roodepoort’s muscle man

Frikkie Page looking to make it three titles in a row

Roodepoort’s strongest man Frikkie Page is gunning for his third consecutive title of strongest man.

He will be participating in the South Africa’s Strongest Man under 105-kilograms in Bloemfontein on 30 April.

The Bad Boy Clothing sponsored athlete won the competition in 2014 and last year October in Pretoria.

Defending his title meant that he would once again represent the country at the World Strongest Man competition.

The event was held in Norway but Frikkie suffered a hamstring injury a week before the competition started.

However, Frikkie did not give up and still competed. He finished the competition in 21st position.

“It was a fun experience representing my country even though I was hurt. After three deadlifts I could feel things were not going well. However, now I’m training extra hard to make up for that and do even better,” he said.

The competition in Bloemfontein will start with a Log Press at 135-kilograms followed by a Suitcase which is 140-kilogram per hand for a total of 280-kilograms of weight.

In this event, he will be attempting to break his won record which he set in 2014.

The Suitcase will be followed by a Deadlift for reps at 280-kilograms.

It will then be a Medly which include flipping a 380-kilogram tyre and carrying an atlas stone for a distance in the fastest time.

It will then be the Yolk at 370-kilograms then Atlas Stones from 120-kilograms of weight.

No straps, suits or sticky material can be used during the competition.

“I train at home and I am excited about what’s to come this year. I am aiming to win the national competition then qualify for the international competition,” he said.

Frikkie has had a passion for the sport since he was young after watching athletes challenging their bodies on television.

“To compete once is never enough, I just want to continue competing and winning. That is what drives me,” he said.

Frikke also had a bit of advice for those who want to participate in the sport.

“Those starting out must get proper help in the gym to avoid injuries. They must start with the basics of exercising and have someone to advise them on the right nutrition, diet and training programme,” he said.
