Boxing club makes Roodepoort it’s new home

Young boxers have an outlet to turn pro

BRD Sports Academy has found a new home in Roodepoort. The boxing club which opened earlier this month is headed by Manny Fernandes who has an extensive history in the sport.

The reason he has decided to anchor his club at Hillfox Shopping Centre is to find new talent in the West Rand.

With Roodepoort resident Hansie Carr as one of his boxers, Fernandes is confident to find new talent in the area.

“There are plenty of young and talented amateur boxers in the West Rand who need an outlet to turn professional. We can provide that for them. Plus there are many professional boxers from the area that I coach so this makes things easier for them,” he said.

Boxing since the age of seven, Fernandes found that he was more interested in teaching boxing which he calls an art.

“The sport is an art to me and I wanted to teach that art to other boxers. This club will allow me to do that here in Roodepoort and West Rand. The boxers that belong to the club can use this facility to train clients and earn some money so the club won’t be dormant,”he said.

Fernandes started coaching in 1996 and opened B.R.D Sports Academy a year later in the south of Johannesburg.

He has gone on to produce eight world champions such as Simon Ramoni, Malcolm Klaasen, Isaac Hlatshwayo and Oscar Chauke.

The club not only offers boxing but crossfit training and team building with athletes which helps with stamina.

“The reception from the community has been great. Since we opened at the beginning of the month, we’ve already signed 30 people to the gym,” said Fernandes.

The club is open Monday to Friday from 6am to 8pm. Saturday it’s open from 6am to 12pm.
