A serve for determination

HONEYDEW – Sean Elder discusses his motivation for wanting to be a tennis coach along with the setbacks he has faced.

Sean Elder is a passionate tennis coach who passes his love for the game he grew up playing, to his determined students. The Honeydew Tennis Club coach shared his sentiments about growing up being surrounded by tennis.

Elder divulged that he started playing tennis after his father compelled him and his brother to play the sport. He recalled how he was part of the top five U21 players, when his dreams of going professional were snatched from his clutches after a major shoulder injury. After coaching at many clubs, Elder finally found his spin at Honeydew Country Club. He went on to add that since his arrival at the club, he has since become part of the committee and became secretary of the club.

He further divulged that his tennis inspirations growing up were Björn Borg and Jimmy Connors. “Björn was a machine when he played, he would hit the ball with such ease, and Connors was taught to play by his mother and no one believed he would win because his technique was not so great, but he went on to win the US Open two years in a row,” said Elder.

Elder, who is now an internationally qualified coach explained about the different balls that are used in the sport. He explained that there is a red ball used for beginners, a orange ball that has about 50 per cent less bounce and the green ball, which is now a registered club level ball.

“I’m very happy when I see people gain confidence in this sport,” said Elder. He did add that he thinks women’s tennis at the club is one that is growing and will eventually pickup and gain momentum.
