Juniors excel at Gauteng

Junior paddlers getting ready for the big test in Natal

The juniors representing various clubs and schools throughout Gauteng, participated in a sprint training race.

The event was hosted by Victoria Lake Canoe Club at Germiston Lake this weekend (27 February).

This was to prepare the young paddlers for the annual interprovincial, interschool SA School Sprints Competition which takes place at Shongweni Dam in KwaZulu-Natal at the end of March.

The canoeists earn points for every race they finish throughout the year which accumulate towards the year’s overall total, crediting themselves as individuals, the school they represent, and the club where they train.

Awards are presented to the top achievers in all age groups.

Discovery’s David Brown from Laerskool Gustav Preller and is a racing member of Florida Lake Canoe Club’s team had an excellent outing.

He finished his 200m sprint in 1:19, the 500m in 3:34 and the 1000m race in 6:57 to finish in fifth place overall.

Brown earned 16 points to be credited to his school, and the club he represents.

Jade and Taylor Hunta, also pupils at Gustav Preller took part in their first ever sprint race in the Gauteng Canoe Union.

Participating in the girls U/12, the girls finished in 10th and 11th position respectively, earning 11 and 10 points.
