Young paddlers ready for season

Junior paddlers are being trained for the upcoming competitions.

Florida Lake Canoe Club’s junior paddlers have been training towards the SA School Sprint Inter-provincial races which take place in KwaZulu-Natal at the end of March.

The Gauteng Canoe Union School League organises races to help prepare the youth for their challenges. The club will host a race on 12 March.

Sprints is the Olympic discipline, and the SA School Sprint Competition is the annual interprovincial event building youth towards that goal.

“However, stamina, endurance and fitness are a key factor to built up in young paddlers,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

Children from 6 to 18 years of age will compete against each other at Florida Lake.

They will earn points which will be logged and credited at the end of the year to the school represented.

The club and the individual top points achievers will also be awarded recognition.

Medals are given at each race throughout the year and trophies at the year end.

Julian’s People Who Care 2, a charity organisation who support less privileged community members, will ensure that all children have something to eat and hydration as part of the event.
