Die Ruiter shows what real wrestling is

Die Ruiter Wrestling Club is ready for the new year in their new home.

It’s a new year and Die Ruiter Wrestling Club has once again been on the move.

The club which has been struggling to find permanent residence since moving from Durban Deep have a new place to call their home.

Thanks to Hoërskool Bastion, the club can now use the school’s old gym as their home.

“We have always been looking for a better venue and Bastion’s sports department was more than happy to accommodate us. We were able to put our wrestling equipment in here and since this was a gym before, there are pull-up bars and ropes we can use,” said the club’s head coach Dean van Zyl.

The gym offers more space for the club to use which means they can recruit more wrestlers.

Currently the club has 80 registered wrestlers with numerous having represented their club on the national and international stage.

“The improved facility has seen an improvement in the performances of our wrestlers which bodes well for the club. They are able to express themselves more and we as the coaches can put them through their paces without worrying about lack of space. We can also divide our wrestlers based on their level of experience and knowledge of wrestling,” said Van Zyl.

The club also takes in children from St Laurence’s Children’s Haven, however, the club needs funds to help assist these children and many more.

Not only is van Zyl the head coach but he is assisted by experienced wrestlers such as Justin van Zyl, Andrè Venter, Andries van Aswegen, Leon Faasen and Patricia Theledi.

These assistant coaches help the head coach with the wrestlers and impart their vast knowledge of the sport.

The club has practices on Tuesdays and Thursday.

Junior classes a first from 6pm to 7pm and senior classes follow from 7pm to 8.30pm.

For more information about the club contact Dean van Zyl at 082-850-9871 or the club’s secretary Sylvia van Zyl on 078-900-4217.
