RUIMSIG – Ryan Dreyer from Killarney Country Club won the Central Gauteng Golf Union Mid-Amateur Tournament.

The 2016 Central Gauteng Golf Union (CGGU) Mid-Amateur Tournament Open/Closed was held at Ruimsig Country Club (RCC) on 17 January, for the fourth consecutive year.

Players from all over the country participated. This tournament forms part of the national order of merit used to select provincial teams.

Some exciting golf was witnessed, as Elton James from Western Province went into the final round with a one shot lead over three players. However, after 36 holes there was a three-way tie with Elton James (68; 71), Neil Fusedale (72; 67) and Ryan Dreyer (70; 69).

After a sudden-death playoff on the 13th hole, Dreyer from Central Gauteng birdied to win the tournament with a total gross score of 139.

Fusedale shared the closed trophy with Dreyer, as the two top Central Gauteng players after 36 holes.

CGGU open golf manager, Jaco du Plessis, said the players used the tournament as part of their selection criteria to represent Gauteng.

2016 marks the change in the qualifying age to participate in the mid-amateur to correspond with the European qualification process, as players could be 30 years and older to enter, as opposed to previous years where players had to be 35 years and older.

“A special thanks to RCC, their committee, staff and members for allowing us the use of the course to host the event,” noted Du Plessis.
