Eagle Canyon Soccer Club needs young footballers

HONEYDEW – Eagle Canyon Soccer Club offers skills development for children from as young as three years.

The Eagle Canyon Soccer Club is back in full swing this year and is open to all residents in the Honeydew area. The club has been in operation for the past four consecutive years.

An initiative by football legend Peter Grgin, the club offers among others a safe soccer environment, organised training and in-house matches.

Grgin explained that they accommodate children from as young as three years old.

This legendary footballer and coach with more than three decades of experience at all levels in the game said his focus was on the young players.

“I have seen a gap and realised that children as young as three years old were not really accommodated by many teams so I started an initiative,” he said.

He further explained that all children in the area were welcome whether they resided at Eagle Canyon Estate or not. “The little ones learn faster. We do skills development but we also offer matches once a month,” said Grgin.

The team is open to girls and boys from three years of age with or without any soccer skills. “Each child will be individually assessed to determine their skills and maturity level,” he continued.

Grgin played soccer in the ’70s and ’80s for few teams in National First Division. He played for Berea Park from Pretoria and Lusitano from Johannesburg.

He was later appointed as the coach of Lusitano and he received his professional coaching course in England. “Those days we used to play with the likes of Jomo Sono,” he explained.

Grgin’s emphasis is on giving the children an enjoyable experience, teaching them the fundamentals of the game, skills development, team participation and cooperation. Children train on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 4.30pm until 5.30pm.

Parents who want their children to join the club can contact Grgin. The training and scheduled matches with clubs from other estates will commence in February.
